Admittedly, I’m not a massive Floyd fan. Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall are especially hailed and praised by the average prog fan, but I find that the dark horse of their discography has to be the fantastic Animals, which is often left relatively underrated.
The conceptual, progressing songs that span over 10 minutes each (bar both parts to ‘Pigs on the Wing’, which I consider to be just an intro / outro) make Animals‘ tracks iconic examples of progressive rock in these characteristics. Compared with the other major Floyd albums, Animals is quite stripped back, especially in the acoustic driven ‘Dogs’ and ‘Pigs on the Wing’; although saying that, the use of vocoder modulation on the vocals in ‘Pigs (Three Different Ones) and the barking in ‘Dogs’ is fantastic.
I’m not sure I have much else to say – the music speaks for itself as an incredible Pink Floyd album, and for me, the most so. But what do you guys think? Do you love Animals as much as I do and say it’s your favourite Floyd album? If not, what don’t you like about it?
